CRSP tour to Ponteix, SK a success

The Calgary Renaissance Singers and Players are very proud to have presented a wonderful concert in Ponteix, Saskatchewan on Saturday, August 2, 2014 as part of the town’s 100th anniversary celebration.

This was our choir’s third time singing at the Notre Dame d’Auvergne Parish Church–a glorious cathedral-sized building famous for its history. We practiced for two months prior to this performance, looking forward to singing pieces like Laurisden’s O Magnum Mysterium in this church’s excellent acoustic.

On the night of the performance, we filled the main seating area and estimate having 350 guests. One of our sopranos, Tania Smith, said “I felt like my voice lifted me up off the floor as it floated and reverberated,” and many others reported feeling like they sang better than usual in this atmosphere. Our director, Jane Perry, wrote that “We sang well, we gained a wagonload of new fans and invitations to return, and we had a great time together.”

Indeed, our good times in Ponteix included some extra time practicing and singing for fun in the church, as well as late-night singing and laughter in our residence common room. We also enjoyed many special events during the town’s celebrations, such as the parade, the spectacular fireworks display, the centennial mass (at which we performed “Ubi Caritas”), and we were invited to a dinner and brunch hosted by the town at their Rink.

The CBC featured the Town of Ponteix’s 100th anniversary celebration in a French-language broadcast. The choir was featured at 01:50 in the video, and our Artistic Director, Jane Perry, speaks briefly.
