Jean-Louis Bleau enjoys a very active music career in and around Calgary. In addition to being
the new Artistic Director of the Calgary Renaissance Singers and Players, Jean-Louis is
Artistic Director of the Calgary Men's Chorus and the Airdrie Community Choir. He is also
the President of New Works Calgary and founding Director of Open Streams, an experimental
music initiative which seeks to perform music in unique locations including the
outdoors, most notably around a mountain lake in Kananaskis.
Jean-Louis began his choral conducting career at St. Gerard's Parish, Calgary, where he
is still actively involved, directing three of the five choirs at the parish. In addition
to his responsibilities at St. Gerard's, Jean-Louis is often called upon to coordinate
and direct the music for large festive celebrations and special events at St. Mary's
Cathedral in Calgary.
When not directing choirs, Jean-Louis can be heard singing counter-tenor, having
performed alongside the award-winning Land's End Chamber Ensemble and with the Early
Music Ensemble of the University of Calgary. In August 2007 Jean-Louis traveled to
Ontario to take part in the staging of R. Murray Schafer's opera "Princess of the Stars".
His wide vocal range has definitely been an asset during his choral conducting career.
Jean-Louis' passion for music - especially choral music - is evident in his
unique and expressive conducting style and his enthusiastic approach to music and
rehearsals. As a conductor and singer, Jean-Louis relishes the opportunity to
explore a vast array of music with a variety of musicians and is grateful for the
opportunity to work with the members of the Calgary Renaissance Singers and Players.
