About Us

The Calgary Renaissance Singers & Players (CRSP) is an auditioned, mixed voice community choral ensemble dedicated to bringing the rich music and culture of the Renaissance to life. Now in our sixth decade, we bridge the 16th and 21st centuries through vibrant performances accompanied by associated instrumentalists, and dramatic/theatrical storytelling. Our purpose is to inspire, entertain, and educate our audiences and members–embracing musical excellence, community, and joyful curiosity.

The Opportunity

CRSP is seeking an inspiring, skilled, and collaborative Artistic Director to guide the musical and artistic vision of the ensemble. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director provides musical leadership, fosters vocal growth, and creates compelling performance experiences for both singers and audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Artistic vision & programming: Together with an artistic advisory team, curate engaging, thematic concert programs centered on the Renaissance while exploring creative connections to contemporary choral literature and diverse traditions. Incorporate storytelling, dramatics, and instrumental collaborations that lean into the “Players” aspect of our identity.

  • Rehearsal leadership & vocal pedagogy: Conduct weekly rehearsals (with additional rehearsals or workshops as needed); foster healthy vocal technique, blend, tuning, and authentic historical diction/pronunciation. Establish clear rehearsal objectives in advance so choristers are well prepared and supported to succeed.

  • Chorister and Scholar Development: Audition and welcome new choir members. Mentor choristers across varying levels of experience, and oversee our vibrant Choral Scholars program for emerging young singers.

  • Performance and Community Engagement: Prepare and lead two signature public performances per year (November/December and May), which may include collaborating with guest artists. As occasion arises, take the ensemble into the broader community and develop other educational opportunities.

  • Artistic Collaboration: Collaborate with artists (including musicians, actors, dancers, composers, and others) to enliven our concerts and support existing and emerging talents.

  • Leadership: Work closely with the General Manager and Board of Directors to support audience development, singer recruitment, and public relations, serving as an articulate ambassador for CRSP.

Qualifications & Qualities

  • Master’s degree in music (conducting, vocal performance, and/or musicology) or equivalent professional experience.

  • Demonstrated choral conducting experience, preferably working with auditioned adult community choirs.

  • Knowledge of Early Music practices, style, repertoire, and languages.

  • Proven ability to teach vocal technique, run efficient rehearsals, and balance high musical standards with patience and encouragement.

  • An engaging, articulate, kind, and inspiring leadership presence, paired with a healthy sense of humour.

  • Willingness to take creative risks and openness to feedback.

  • Strong communication, organizational and time management skills, and self-motivation.

Terms & Remuneration

  • Annual contract, reviewed annually and renewable by mutual agreement.

  • Remuneration: $1,300 – $1,600/month (12-month contract)

  • The Artistic Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and serves as a non-voting member of the Board.
