PAST CONCERTS

CRSP Presents • The Spirit of the Renaissance: Part I

November 29, 2014 @ 7:30 PM
St. Stephen’s Anglican Church – 1121 14 Avenue SW, Calgary
Guest Musician: Rachael Cogan, Recorder

In this concert, we performed Giovanni Gabrieli’s triumphant double-choir setting of “Hodie Christus natus est” alongside the gorgeous eight-part setting of “O magnum mysterium” by U. S. composer Morten Lauridsen. Reflective music by Salamone Rossi and Melchior Vulpius found companions in the music of Norwegian-American composer Ola Gjeilo and Swedish composer Jan Sandström. Sandström’s double-choir setting of Michael Praetorius’s “Lo, how a rose e’er blooming” involved a second choir providing a haunting, unearthly choral glow around Praetorius’s original harmonies.

We were proud to present recorder player Racheal Cogan as our guest artist. Some of you will remember Racheal’s performance at our May 2014 concert, and will understand why we just had to have her back.

We resurrected of The Good Cheer Section, a small group of CRSP choristers who made enthusiastic presentations of Renaissance carols and drinking songs to add a little extra festivity to this holiday concert.

CRSP Presents • The Spirit of the Renaissance: Part 2

May 2, 2015 @ 7:30 pm
St. Stephen’s Anglican Church (1121 – 14th Avenue SW, Calgary)

In this concert, CRSP performed works celebrating the theme of “life and death” by Medieval and Renaissance English composers, as well as modern European composers who took their musical inspiration from the Renaissance. Works by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and the English composer John Tavener (d. 2013) stood alongside music by English Medieval Renaissance composers, Guillaume de Machaut, John Sheppard, and others. Between musical selections, Calgary professional actor Josh Bertwistle and Kendra Vanwijk performed scenes from the Everyman Play (from the late 15th century) as abridged by playwright Lorna Rowsell-Petti.
